After reviewing almost 200 applicants for our faculty search, I can a say a lot of things (some truly amazing scientists out there!). But, PIs PLEASE send in your letters of recommendation. You're really screwing over your trainees if your letters aren't there to review.

Life sciences are getting a lot of heat for animal-based research. Noted, there is room for improvement. However, a back-of-the-envelope calculation learns that we can make a far bigger difference in other areas of human activity. Food & Exp numbers, worldwide.

How confident are you? In this CSH Symposia Review, we discuss how our sense of confidence is rooted in a statistical computation that is realized by neural systems (aka my postdoc).

I've made this cheat sheet and I think it's important. Most stats 101 tests are simple linear models - including "non-parametric" tests. It's so simple we should only teach regression. Avoid confusing students with a zoo of named tests. 1/n

Check out my lab's latest paper: "Density Estimation on Small Data Sets", just published in Physical Review Letters. We describe a new method for estimating smooth probability distributions from small data sets.

Causality is the basis of clean thinking. Are there textbooks that teach causality focusing on the intuitions instead of the proofs? I mean I like book of why but would like something broader and more sciency. I want something that makes people easily see causal nonsense.

42 years after The Selfish Gene, most science writers still don't understand that natural selection does not act for the good of the species. Otherwise excellent NYT article: Plants Can’t Talk. But Some Fruits Say ‘Eat Me’ to Animals.
