Important that @aminatou acknowledged @redlightvoices, whose work inspired the title and discussion of the panel, was not at the @SydWritersFest. She notes the work of #WOC often goes viral, but those same WOC creators and thinkers are always left behind.
Background on #intersectionality theory and practice, conceptualised by Prof @sandylocks, discussed by @zinziclemmons. It recognises race + gender, originally theorised in context of Black American women industrial relations law dispute.
Most salient point was by @nakkiahlui. When asked what has made her most angry about White feminists, she talked of being at an event with WW feminists when the #UluruStatement was rejected by Prime Minister Trurnbull. No one else mentioned this significant & damaging event...
...Other feminists see #UluruStatement as a "Black issue." But @nakkiahlui shows it's more; it is also a women's issue. Aboriginal women experience greatest inequity & health gap in Australia. The Uluru Statement can save Aboriginal women's lives. And so this IS a feminist issue.
Jenny Zhang said White feminists who want to claim #intersectionality as an identity ("I'm an intersectional feminist") should step back & reflect before wanting to dominate this term (& incorrectly). If done right, self reflection might mean WW never get to adopt this term...
...all panellists discussed why "intersectional feminist" is a nonsense term removed from its original meaning. #Intersectionality is about inclusive feminist practice.
"Intersectional feminist" is virtue signalling. WW wanting to be seen as "not racist" but not doing the work
Jenny Zhang also discussed #intersectionality is about labour. Asian women, and other Brown & Black women, are employed in exploitative conditions so White women "can have it all." They do all emotional labour & childcare yet seldom get to see their own children.
Kirstie Whitaker Retweeted Dr Zuleyka Zevallos
Ah - this tweet has made me worried - I call myself an intersectional feminist and I’m white. I hope I do more than virtue signalling and I totally get the irony of this question but do you have a good link to describe the difference?https://twitter.com/othersociology/status/992765533060648961?s=21 …
Kirstie Whitaker added,
Hi. Start with the 1989 article by Prof Crenshaw. #Intersectionality is not about identity. It is about how race & gender interconnect in structural oppression. Also see Prof Crenshaw's TED Talk or interviews. Intersectionality is about taking action. It's not a title to claim.
Awesome - got it (well - got the point I need to meditate more on!) Thank you!
