Natalie Chapman got her first major leadership role in marketing not because of her science degree but because she worked at KFC in customer service & as a cook for 7 years, also managing staff. Life experience is just as important as qualifications. #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/jNeGZPJ4KH

Natalie Chapman is sharing her career failures, including reapplying for jobs years later. She says relationships are important. "You have to risk rejection. Not putting yourself forward and kicking yourself after is worse. Put your hat in the ring and have a go." #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/YYc7heQEWC

in summary - photograph this slide. don't underestimate the value of experience vs qualifications. insurance of can-do attitude, flexibility and adaptability. power of life long learning. necessity of resilience - to bounce back in adversity.

Prof Jenny Martin @Jenny_STEM is delivering the Ben Chuwen Keynote, who was a founding member of the @EMCRForum in 2011, who passed away at age 37. She starts by acknowledging "shadow CVs" are all the unexpected paths and challenges we don't share publicly. #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/ap2F3KeMJ6

Prof Jenny Martin stands behind the podium. She is a cisgender able-bodied White woman.
career path (arrow pointing upward) it's really like (arrow wields around in hazard circles)
shadow CV. The iceberg illustration (above water: success. arrow points to what people see. underwater: what people don't see: persistence, failure, hard work, discipline)
some of my life lessons: career paths are never straight. have a plan. challenges are also opportunities. metrics focus on a narrow aspect of merit. Life is a gift - be thankful, enjoy it. never stop learning

Prof @Jenny_STEM took us through the VUCA framework - how to identify symptoms and treatments: volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous. Her role models: Judy Martin (her mum); thesis supervisor, Prof Peter Andrews; & crystallography researcher Prof Dorothy Hodgkins. #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/rySFz6N1kq

volatile - increasing rate of change requires vision. uncertain - unclear present, past not predictor of future; needs understanding and empathy. complex - multiple decision factors need clarity. ambiguous - misinterpretation, doubt needs agility.
slide: find a role model not a ruler. with photos of Prof Jenny Martin's role models
three take home messages: networks not hierarchies; define your path/ vision; health and wellness

Kimberly Olsen: the training we concentrate on often focuses on pointing out differences. #Intersectionality is about seeing barriers and access of opportunities. She disagrees with setting quotas (which I advocated for in my talk). #SciPath18

A sign of a good workplace that values diversity is when you drive home and the only thing you think about is the work - not the things that were said about you or your culture or your difference. A good leader shows integrity in all areas. - Dr Soressa Kitessa. #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/cFYQv6t9kq

inclusive project teams: even handed manager, everyone supported one another, open communication, mentoring, spoken body language of manager sets tone for team
inclusive multidisciplinary team: plant science, little if any overlap in expertise, clear good, excellent leadership, enjoyable and productive life

Dr Soressa Kitessa on less inclusive teams. Handling racism/ sexism/ phobia: set boundaries early. There's a pressure to laugh and fit in, but the hurt builds up. #SciPath18pic.twitter.com/di4CVmuVOG

characteristics of less inclusive teams: information rationing, low level of trust, delegation not linked to objective criteria, an environment less likely to foster good career prospects for minorities
final thoughts: working in science is not always democratic, set boundaries early
