Ok, I am looking for some help - are there any women here who work in a lab without a lab manager? If so, how have you bypassed becoming the “lab mom” and not getting stuck doing lab chores? #AskingForAFriend #ItMe #WomenInStem

I do, but I'm the only person in my lab besides my PI at the moment. He works on his own pet projects sometimes, but I never clean his bench and only occasionally clean any dishes he's left in the sink. We have a lot of shared equipment so I involve other labs on maintenance.

I'll also say to my PI's credit that when his previous lab manager left he didn't immediately shift all her duties on me. I only do what directly pertains to my research and he's handled everything else, which he's now sick of, so he's finally filling that position.

Glad your PI is not exploiting you - the way it should be. I'm managing a couple of projects on apprenticeships so I spend a lot of time thinking about presumptions about what the manager/ learner involves. Cleaning is often pushed on junior staff.
