Many scientists & orgs are cowering from speaking out on sexual harassment, refraining from addressing Prof Terry Speed case, because they like him. Your silence sends a dangerous message to women looking to leaders to do the right thing ALWAYS not just when it's convenient.

And the gender power & racial dynamics are staggering, though unsurprising: a White man is getting a pass by organisations led by White people. Equity & diversity is not an opt-in, opt-out smokescreen. It requires proactive action, ongoing evaluation & public transparency.

"Women in science" & other science organisations have no business leading equity & diversity programs where they inconsistently apply principles & policies. Lacking basic code of ethics on discrimination & harassment is a red flag. Lack of consequences & leadership another.

Not having a public equity & diversity strategy is yet another troubling trend. Taking an unequivocal and public stand when a member of sci community engages in harassment & discrimination should be the bare minimum. Every org that failed to do this feeds culture of of silence
