Over the past ~10 yrs I’ve watched friends and peers and now students and strangers attempt to report. In the cases where I have a lot of personal knowledge I’ve never once been impressed with how the org handled the complaint.https://twitter.com/othersociology/status/967223298244468736 …

Having standard policies and reporting mechanisms for sexual harassment is NOT GOOD ENOUGH, especially if people don't know how to access them, or don't trust them, or have no support mechanisms to protect complainants. Victims fear professional retribution - and with good reason

Cannot agree more. Even when institutions find sexual harassment has occurred, perpetrators get no more than a slap on the wrist - if anything at all. Sometimes it takes YEARS of multiple investigations for serious consequences. How anyone comes forward is unfathomable. Not fair.

I don't get why this is handled "internally." This should be handled by the local police department not the uni. Not that this would resolve things but still...

Hi. In most jurisdictions police investigate sexual assault, not sexual harassment in the workplace. Law makes employers responsible for safety in this sense. But employers "must provide clear guidance on internal investigation procedures and record keeping" amongst other things

Having said all that - too many workplaces do a poor job, especially in academia or this wouldn't be as chronic. Countless studies show this. The processes need to change because they lack impact and protect harassers rather than survivors.
