I have decided to refuse to review for Nature Communications. $5200 USD to publish! That is about half the cost of my PhD! As a postdoc in Canada this fee prevented me from sending a manuscript there. I wonder how many good papers were never submitted for that reason. Thoughts?

My US R1 has exactly ZERO dollars for publishing fees. My favorite journals used to be no cost to a few hundred dollars to publish. One just went from $0 to $1900. Another from ~$10 to $100 per page ($1000+). My grants can't sustain these costs.
Wow! How can these catastrophic fees (and price hikes) be justified? Gross.
