.@linaXpatel and Grace O'Hara from @CodeforAus. Core managers in org are migrants. 60 staff; half born outside Aus from non-English-speaking-majority nations. Purposefully seek to hire people with diverse life experiences. Lack of diversity in tech is self-imposed. #techinclusionpic.twitter.com/FPy0KNJVsC

.@CodeforAus hired three all-women teams. Here's how the did it: don't blame women/ the market; start with your level of influence (from hiring, to policies, to meet-ups); don't be afraid to make (and fix!) mistakes; & share your power. #techinclusionpic.twitter.com/igvyyPw9oE

Grace O'Hara and Lina Patel on stage. slide projection says: time for action. stop placing blame. start where you can. test your product. share your power.

Arsehole culture in tech attracts more terrible values. They don't want diversity. They want people who will follow them. - @shaft #techinclusionpic.twitter.com/jEYpdOZzAb

Tech is not neutral. Most tech is not truly innovative because it does not lead to structural innovation. E.g. tech does not tackle systemic inequality. - @sw & @waynesutton #techinclusion

Companies fail on equity and diversity because they often bring in an expert that does not represent diversity of the population, so they continue with a colonial approach (focusing on White women) that does not make true change. - @sw #techinclusion

Minorities are very interested in STEM. But too much focus is on consumers, not on being creators. The problem is the language and how it's sold, especially to Aboriginal children who aren't made aware that there are opportunities. - @waynedenning #TechInclusion

Problem: lack of trust despite good intentions. What is going to be different, make meaningful change? Many schools have had bad experiences with "do gooders... eho swan in" and don't make positive change. Make tech learning & skills more relevant. - Hope Perkins #Techinclusion

Using positive stories & social media helps connect with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children. Mainstream stories leave them out and underestimate them. Need to work with parents & make tech more relatable. E.g. ranger tracking or football. @waynedenning #TechInclusion
