/ Beyond disappointing to see Prof Terry Speed was found to have sexually harassed a woman postdoc, via @UCBerkeley investigation. University has taken no direct action.

/ I send solidarity to Complainant One, the woman postdoc who faced severe career & life consequences as a result of Prof Speed's harassment, & Complainant Two, Prof
@lpachter who came forward. Prof Speed is yet another highly respected & rewarded male scientist to abuse powerpic.twitter.com/hOG4cg1C0V

/ Prof Speed pushed unwanted sexual attention on this woman postdoc & then retaliated: "unless she was willing to reconcile with him as he wished, she could not count on his recommendation." Yet as Prof Pachter noted, Prof Speed holds himself up as a "male feminist" to this day

/ Prof Speed not only sponsors Australia's national gender equity in STEMM program (SAGE/Athena SWAN), he was his organisation's co-lead on this program
@WEHI_research when I was managing SAGE in 2015-2016. Unbeknown to all, he was held up as a "male champion of change."1 reply 11 retweets 20 likesShow this thread -
/ While I was managing SAGE, I continued to volunteer & write on equity & diversity issues as I do now, under my affiliation as Adjunct Research Fellow, Swinburne University. I wrote this article on sexual harassment... https://theconversation.com/how-to-stop-the-sexual-harassment-of-women-in-science-reboot-the-system-53210 … Prof Speed wrote me in support...

/ In his email, sent me from his institutional email to my professional email as SAGE manager, he said he wanted to implement sexual harassment reforms that I discussed in my article. He says my piece was "terrific" & that he wants to review policies & procedures in his org.pic.twitter.com/kqtrJBcB3T

/ Harassers often set themselves up as advocates of equity. While people can atone, damage must 1st be addressed in a way that honours the needs of survivors. Prof Speed has not publicly addressed this & thus cannot be trusted in a position of authority over women or postdocs

/ I have taken private steps asking key organisations to respond & take clear measures of accountability to lead change. I hope that other organisations linked to Prof Speed, especially those leading equity & diversity programs, take a public stance against harassment & inequity

/ So far, key leaders in science are being silent. We see your inaction. Please speak up. To be serious about anti-harassment & anti-discrimination means always taking action, whenever injustice happens, and not giving special protection to mates & elite figures.

/ On a personal note, my entire day off has been wasted dealing with the aftermath of this, as is the case with many other courageous women colleagues working behind the scenes to push action & change. It shouldn't be up to us, women & survivors of harassment, to make progress

/ Finally, men in science & academia SPEAK UP. Can't call yourself an "ally" or a "good guy" or a "champion of change" if you only get up for accolade & speeches. It's not enough to NOT harass - low bar for collegiality. Use your male privilege to ensure this pattern ends now.
