Some academics need to remember what it's like to live on minimum wage for starters, & more broadly, to see how important these external jobs are. 1/ connecting with different audiences; 2/ work-life balance. Trying out other jobs is a benchmark for how we are managed in science
Had I never worked in other fields and worked only in academia, I would have been in for a rude shock. I also see it's possible for different management styles and teamwork configurations. All of this is relevant to being a better scientist!
