If students are getting this advice, I would question where it comes from and to what aim. The fact is that few students from underprivileged backgrounds can afford to do unpaid internships or have connections to get into early research programs to have "pure science" experience

Of course I was! Student housing has nothing to do with SCIENCE Dr. Zevallos

I found a way to mention my resident assistant experiences in my essay bc there was no way I was letting myself go through hell and not brag about it

-
YES! I did put it in essays.

Sorry to rant, just a realisation that I did a LOT of work during undergrad that I've always felt was "waste" but wasn't. Tx for thread /end

Oh - I *have* been discouraged from including my high school from CV in the past, since I went to an unprestigious public school

-
My high school was evident on my first job CV via my "other awards" section. It was not prestigious at all! Snobbery has negative consequences for students who went straight from high school to uni to looking for work. (That's me!) School achievements mattered to my skill base
-
Also imp reminder for me to check my privilege when reading students CVs - I KNOW I have judged ppl who included retail etc experience

(though thankfully haven't made any recruitment decisions to date). Thanks so much for your tweets
