Context and the person asking matter. "Where are you from?" is rooted in racism. White people ask this because they're surprised to see people of colour in spaces they see as theirs. "Why don't you look like me?" They don't care about the answer. They just want to Other us

yup and that's also when i say something like "i was born here" they're like "no, i mean, where are you RLY from? what are your origins???" they get worked up over that.
