I identify as a
#WOC and use#POC. It's interesting that some people say this doesn't resonate in Australia - this is true, but there is a historical reason for this. Race is only understood in Oz in relation to "Black/White" - & even then poorly...1 reply 2 retweets 8 likes -

We talk about "migrants" and "Anglos" because Whiteness is built into Federation. This disguises race. Who has "ethnicity"? Actually everyone (ethnicity is culture) but "ethnic" is only used for migrants who aren't White & ppl who aren't immedietely *recognised* as Aboriginal

History of the term
#POC which has been eluded to elsewhere on the thread is a political movement to bring together people who are "othered" due to race. And it matters that this was started by women of colour!1 reply 1 retweet 10 likes -

Just as race is a social construction, but real in its impact, so too is the social construction of the terms used to describe/define race.
#WOC &#POC were terms started by people like us; other terms were imposed by White people.1 reply 0 retweets 9 likes
Finally, I recognise that #POC doesn't resonate with many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and some other Black people but for different reasons - anti-Blackness is pervasive across cultures. So I try to be mindful & tend to use the terms they use for themselves.
