Agreed, but scientists as a general group, (and especially publicly funded ones) ducking questions, *on science* cause
Exactly. We are all specialists. We aren't even all equally qualified to comment on other specialty sub-fields within our own disciplines.

"it's not my own specific sub-field" is, IMHO, a bit weak and leads to the issues we have at the moment (climate change denial, vaccines)
