Being involved with several gender equity programs for yrs, through work & volunteering, I see much profiteering from predatory orgs. 1/
-
-
Disingenuous "gender equity" conferences have used either my name or name of orgs I work for to recruit academic speakers w/ false info. 3/
-
These conferences create slick brochures w/ big-name academics (who aren't paid) & then charge $2,000 or more per day for registration. 4/
-
They target women academics & bloggers offering fake discounts. One of our groups has received multiple unsolicited invites for $3K rego. 5/
-
Topics covered laughable - "Women's leadership: can women have it all?" "Gender equity: learn to negotiate!" This is not evidence-based. 6/
-
For-profit conference companies scan social media & academic trends to see what's "hot." Right now, they see a market for gender equity. 7/
-
As more gender equity programs rise in prominence, there's more snake oil sales industry. Charging $2K-$5K for workshop is ANTI-EQUALITY! 8/
-
Be careful in what you or your organisation support. Don't accept invites to speak at gender equity event that's prohibitively expensive. 9/
-
Check credentials of conference organisers. Are they delivering gender equity event for reputable research or community organisation? 10/
-
They may have a flash brochure, a website & amazing line up of speakers - but are organisers actively committed to equity & diversity? 11/
-
If you're asked to be a speaker for a legitimate equity org, request typicaly comes from that org, not initialy from conference company. 12/
-
And as with all conferences, consider that lack of gender AND race balance AND lack of other minority representation is NOT equity. 13/
-
Gender equity is opportunistic business to some. Conferences are expensive to host, so at least support events by not-for-profit orgs. 14/
