Can anyone help me with ethics/appropriateness of asking faculty you know for background info about a job post at their uni before applying?

It's fine to ask; they may not know what the specific role is looking for - that you can get directly from the point of contact on job ad

But expectations of the role and cultural fit - best to get that directly from the point of contact as they'll be your line manager.

It goes both ways; you'll get a sense of what they want and you can see if that manager is a good fit for you.
