Can anyone help me with ethics/appropriateness of asking faculty you know for background info about a job post at their uni before applying?

Speaking to the person you know would be good to get an insight on what it's like to work there. This is a really great thing to do!
But expectations of the role and cultural fit - best to get that directly from the point of contact as they'll be your line manager.

It goes both ways; you'll get a sense of what they want and you can see if that manager is a good fit for you.
