I'm not the only one; many WOC on social media are asked for extraordinary free work from academics while others steal our words/ideas/work

In the past few weeks, a WW academic asked me to write for her textbook in 6th ed. I asked if it paid. She got VERY ANGRY very quick.

She said it would be great "exposure."
I have a platform which is how she found me. But somehow exposure in a *textbook* is "payment"? No.3 replies 19 retweets 79 likes -

2 other academics in space of 2 weeks asked for virtual meetings; one saying they would publish my work they'd read; other to contract me

Instead, they kneedled me for my specialist knowledge on EQUITY (!), thinking I would be ok with being deceived & having my time wasted.

By the way, journalists & publishers do the same. Because I write on equity on social media, I must be okay to perform free labour for them

White women in particular think that I will give them one-on-one coaching or give over my intellectual property for their pet projects. Nope

WW are incredibly exploitative of WOC. What we publish takes a lot of work & takes its toll personally & professionally. It should be enough

Social media is not an invitation to demand more than what WOC are willing to give. Lack of basic respect & appreciation is astounding.

I wish more White people understood the courage it takes to be a WOC on social media. The fact that we are here, sharing, should be enough.

So go ahead, use what I create - that's why it's generously in the public domain! But don't expect to get a "bespoke" version of everything.

And stop stealing WOC's intellectual work, emotional labour, &creativity. Be a good colleague & treat us like real people with finite energy
