The history of Ukrainians is being constantly conquered and forgotten. We didn't even have a country until 1991.

Here in this country my family's history is very short, going back to the 1910s (Italians) and 1950s (Ukrainians)

Many POC have much more of a claim to this country than I ever will (and I mean. Native Americans have us all beat)

White Americans who claim that white heritage is a thing need to GTFO.

This isn't me separating myself as a white person who has a certain amount of white privilege.

1/ Hi. There are 3 concepts you're conflating; best to separate them to make your argument clearer to your readers and yourself.

1/ Race. You are White. Doesn't change despite where you live. It gives you race privilege ALWAYS, despite of individual life circumstance

3/ Race is imposed, socially defined, on basis of what you look like. Social judgements about superiority/inferiority of biological traits

4/ Second, ethnicity - that's about culture. Also socially defined, but it's about what we do that gives our identity meaning (language etc)

5/ What does it mean to *feel* Italian/Ukrainian/etc? Cultural experiences differ for different racial groups. E.g. Who is "us" & "them"?

6/ Third, nationality. Legal entity but contested. As you note, Ukrainians didn't have a country until 1991 referendum on independence.

7/ The issue here is to remain aware about what race & Whiteness is: it doesn't mean ethnic & nationality diffs/ inequalities don't exist...

8/ It means that you don't stop being White (a race) because of ethnic & nationality disputes/historic divides between & within White groups

...and I was more or less prodding that feeling apart. I guess the way white nationalists claim white as a race and heritage bothers me

White is a race. And I am in no way separate from whiteness. But it's the heritage part that burns me up really.
