1/ Black academics should NOT be threated for teaching anti-racism Women + femmes should NOT be threated for speaking out on sexism/racism
-
-
4/ Academic freedom also means institutions support academics who use voice to promote social justice. Not just when it's convenient. Always
-
5/ Institutions benefit from media interviews & social media work by academics. That means equity & diversity considerations to support staff
-
6/ Media policies should not simply tell academics what to say/not to say, but clearly show measures & process to protect their safety.
-
7/ Institutions have a duty of care, not just on campus, but to support academics & students when media attention leads to harassment.
-
8/ Occupational health safety: it's unacceptable to add to mental health issues academics face by leaving them to manage public abuse alone
-
9/ Can't reap benefits of having academics raise institutional esteem through public engagement without taking safety & wellbeing seriously.
-
10/ Public harassment is not now, nor should it ever be, the price of academic engagement. Fix policies & priorities if you act otherwise.

I agree w/much of what you say, but not this. Who gets to decide which is hate speech and which is free speech? Dangerous, dangerous ground.
-
Hate speech laws already exist. As defined by international law. UN article 20: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/CCPR.aspx … 16-21: http://www.ohchr.org/Documents/Issues/Racism/A-HRC-26-49.pdf …

It strikes me many would-be defenders of
#AcademicFreedom seem not to notice when their freedoms begin to impinge on the freedoms of others. -
True. Academic freedom used to defend why sexist & racist White man should be allowed to speak but not supported for those who protested him
-
Very reminiscent of the free speech argument: I should have complete freedom even if it prevents you from enjoying such freedom.
