I think he's oblivious to the impact of his words. He is a great scientist but is also a liability re women and science.

His scientific work can live or die on its own merits. Doing harm is always a different matter: it's always on you, I think

Exactly - he's gotten away with it because of his status. So many high-profile people defended him. He could've apologised but doubled down.
