Why is sexual harassment pervasive in academia? In part, because professors defend rape culture & cry academic freedom. #SAFE13 (THREAD

Oh wow, this article is truly dreadful in so, so many ways. It is also pretty enraging that she compares fight against rape to McCarthyism.
Author bio says tht she likes to challenge received wisdom, but I cannot think of anything more establishment than reinforcing rape culture.
Yes to all this! Infuriating to see her argue that policies & protests to protect against sexual assault on campus is "infantalising women."
Ugggh. Reminds me of this gem, from the same school of thought, I guess: https://groups.oist.jp/president/event/woman-science-prof-mary-collins …pic.twitter.com/yJq4lgicWz
Oh my goddess - this is Tim Hunt's wife!!! ARRRRGH. No wonder she supported him as a "victim" of women.
Her talk in Japan. His in Seoul.
I've clicked & found it. Add that to Hunt's recent Starmus comments and I'm angry all over again that anyone doubted the South Korea furore.
I know, right? Clearly feels he can, and should, do more damage.
I think he's oblivious to the impact of his words. He is a great scientist but is also a liability re women and science.
Seen this? I'm swayed by argument: "If you find out someone is [doing harm] their work is not good." TW harassment: https://medium.com/@violetblue/but-he-does-good-work-6710df9d9029 …
His scientific work can live or die on its own merits. Doing harm is always a different matter: it's always on you, I think
Or to put that another way: whatever the value of his scientific work, it's not the point. Except insofar as it has empowered him to do harm
Barf barf barf. I find her so frustrating. Not to mention simplistic and, well, kinda dumb.
We've been here (Camille Paglia early 90s) - it's not "edgy" to blame women. Grrr! (PS not dumb [avoiding ableism] but dangerous certainly!)
You're right, I'm sorry for my use of the term. I of course remembered this was ableist after using. I'm sorry.
Are you telling me I didn't fail you, by not including the 'how to marry a Nobel Laureate' lecture in your PhD training?
The whole article is a train crash.
