Race works differently in Australia - other than poorly framed discussions about Black/White relations, AUS doesn't talk about "race" much

Even in Australian social sciences, since early 1980s, "race" is used less frequently than "ethnicity." But there's lots on "racism."

And in Australia, White people jump to defensive mode, that Australia is "less racist" than USA b/c they don't "see" how race works in AUS.

Growing up in USA and Germany I thought Aus was less racists until as undergrad I boarded with Indonesian friends who started to show me.

Yes I think many people overseas don't know much about AUS history & present. Racism continues to be enshrined in law & in daily practice.
