1/2 Also common in Australia to say "at least we're not as bad as the USA" AUS was founded on genocide, segregation, Indigenous disposession

2/2 Official multiculturalism policy was called the White Australia policy. Racism remains rampant. USA is false benchmark of "bad" racism

Agree - we just own it more than other settler colonialists states since it is embedded in our constitution.....

Australia is unusual; don't have Treaty with Indigenous people. Don't talk about, nor collect data on, race. But race has impact (of course)

That is interesting, especially round data collection. Lack of data allows systems to maintain themselves

1/2 Yes! It limits anti-racism consciousness. Census data are on ancestry. People concede *cultural* differences; "can't we just get along?"

2/2 Ancestry maintains Anglo-Celtic dominance ("we're 6th generation") which then subsumes Indigenous sovereignty & obscures impact of race.

This is how White male politician objected to being called "White" whilst he was attempting to abolish sections of Racial Discriminaton Act

That is what colorblind philosophy looks like as a state lens. So POC and indigenous folks will always be seen/not seen.

Exactly. Affirms White people as arbitrators of race (who is/isn't considered Black, "ethnic," "just Australian") & thus bolsters Whiteness.
