As soon as I read that line, I knew this researcher was a White woman. Stigma of being childfree is NOT comparable to racism.

The research of
#POC which focuses on POC in the sample are considered "ethnic/racial" studies. White people's studies are just "studies." -
Researchers' racial biases, incl how they come to be interested in a particular topic in any field, are not critically examined.
#marginsci -
Then media picks up a study & publish Whiteness as scientific fact, normalising racial bias of researchers Science is political.

The default patient in the studies was always white and middle to upper class.

YES! Most psych studies use White university students. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2013/05/weird_psychology_social_science_researchers_rely_too_much_on_western_college.html … Most other social science studies don't think about race.
-
This is a problem even in sociology studies outside sociology of race. Studies on "relationships" are predominantly about White cishet ppl.

Of course, I was doing my post doc at a psychiatric center that was almost entirely run by white psychiatrists and white psychologists.
-
Yes, exactly - this is how Whiteness is maintained in science. White people dominate research, teaching & practice. Biases go unexamined.

My field drives me nuts.
-
Many
#POC point this out & are ignored or seen as unnecessarily disruptive. All sciences need to rethink how we review our existing theories

I looked at every study there was about this kind of therapy and not a single study bothered to take the time to think about race.

My post-doc involved learning a particular kind of therapy that can be helpful for people with a lot of suicidal ideation & self injury.

For a variety of reasons, I got curious if any issue of diversity was ever addressed.

Not a single study about this very popular kind of therapy (at that time, at least) addressed a single facet of our diverse world.

And during my three or so years at the facility I remember there being exactly one patient who was a person of color.

And I remember exactly one person (me) noticing and talking about the total lack of diversity of the people we served. AND I WAS IGNORED.
