Otherness is an academic concept, theorised to explain social phenomena where powerful groups emphasise differences to denigrade others.

White men especially latch onto sociological concepts, without understanding the literature, to suit their personal worldview & prejudice.

This happens because concepts we use in
#sociology sound familiar ("the other") & describe social experiences (gender). But we use theory -
#Sociology uses critical thinking to analyse taken-for-granted assumptions, putting concepts in historical & cultural context. -
So like with any other lay understanding of any phenomena,
#sociology theories & concepts are not trumped by prejudiced status quo opinions.
