      So true. My public university offers TWO WEEKS paid parental leave. You have to plunder your sick time for the rest.

      Well, in Germany rules are much better but get widely undermined by increasing proportions of shortterm contracts where the rules dont apply

      Really? In the UK, you get full maternity / paternity rights after 6 months in the job, even on a short term contract.

      There's a wide gap between policy & practice esp in academia. Maternity leave & short term contracts are barriers to women's careers in UK
