Faculty colleagues seriously told, some yrs ago that reason leave policy was so bad was they should just plan pregnancies for summer break

This was at my own institution. Policy has since been reformed (of course, had to be spearheaded by a father, not a woman, to get done)

But previously it was "you can get one course release for a semester but only to defer it to another term and you have to do extra service"

Which actually meant taking leave = doing MORE work hours overall

And even getting the course release was at the dean's discretion and not guaranteed

We have automatic tenure rollback for parental upon birth/adoption of child but many are afraid to take it.
