So true. My public university offers TWO WEEKS paid parental leave. You have to plunder your sick time for the rest.

Friend considered carefully parental leave/PTO/Sick leave policies while on the market--planning on kids in the next 5 yrs.

Took admin job at inst that didn't have great parental leave but 3 wks PTO & when she asked if it accumulated year over year they said yes.

Found out after she was hired that "3 wks" meant "uni is closed two weeks a year and you still get paid" and only 5 actual days of PTO.

Faculty colleagues seriously told, some yrs ago that reason leave policy was so bad was they should just plan pregnancies for summer break

This was at my own institution. Policy has since been reformed (of course, had to be spearheaded by a father, not a woman, to get done)
