Watson (and Francis Crick) stole the work of Dr Rosalind Franklin; his Nobel Prize bolstered by scientific sexismhttps://www.amazon.com/Rosalind-Franklin-Dark-Lady-DNA/dp/0060985089 …
Watson also promotes racist and sexual stereotypes of racial minorities and women, along with pseudoscience to promote his dangerous views.pic.twitter.com/HzrqxND9bd
There are real-life consequences to inviting scientists who promote science discrimination to continue to speak at university events:
it reinforces science inequality by giving famous scientists rewards & attention so they can continue to espouse their life-long remarks;
it promotes bad science, by hosting scientists who have published stolen works & who promote flawed pseudoscience on race & gender;
it makes campus unsafe for minorities and women + femmes of various backgrounds, by tolerating bigotry and encouraging exclusion & violence;
finally, undermines students, staff & faculty who promote equity & diversity, diminishing efforts & putting them at risk when they speak out
Personnel & students who protested against Watson's invitation are receiving death threats. That's the calibre of audience Watson attracts.
Science community has to stop prioritising the hero worshipping of scientists who have misused their position to spread bigotry & harassment
