Serious question; what did you guys expect to happen here? People have been talking about oversupply of PhDs for years now...

Well, how hard is it to get 858 (distinguished talent) visas? Is an expansion of this a way to deal with need for external input to unis?

Fair point but incredibly shortsighted to not have a viable replacement. I would be shocked if this was an intended consequence.

We think international STEM postdocs are an essential component of research ecosystem - contributing lots to Australia, not just in science

No question about that. The question is - is there a nationwide skill shortage? How does this reconcile with a 50% PhD grad employment rate?

Hard to quantify - each postdoc is an individual with specific knowledge. New approaches from O/S fuel innovation. Bring collaborative links

The #457visas scheme is based on flawed premise & will still exploit migrants. See Prof Joanna Howe http://www.theage.com.au/comment/there-is-a-big-hole-in-malcolm-turnbulls-457-visa-plan-20170418-gvn3rx.html … #marginsci

A good point about skills shortages in specific localities. Could argue that many STEM jobs are categorised as such. Not a simple problem!
