Naming 2 #WOC as "critical" is a racist narrative. "Debate" my work all you want but junior WOC is NOT fair game for your lesson #marginsci

I would have liked a notice that I was linked, too :|
-
This is so potentially harmful. The fact that they don't see why is disturbing. Other WOC see this & it is off putting.
-
Yes! And there's a diff b/w citation, and posing a (small!) handful of narratives up for discussion. We know better than this.
-
Here's a good example of intention vs impact: especially for diversity context, how work of WOC is presented has real life impact.

Shouldn't have to point this out to anyone, especially not to scholars who for whatever reason feel qualified to run a diversity journal...

And not frame discussion as a debate that must give equal weight to the side that already dominates the lives/careers/participation of WOC.

But discussing junior
#WOC as part of a debate reproduces racist outcomes.#POC survival doesn't have a legitimate opposite side.#marginsciThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

By all means: my writing is public so discuss/critique away. But if you think framing 2 sides to
#marginsci as equally valid is useful...Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Ask yourself: who is your "allyship" for if you think diversity is up to you to debate?

You don't have the same stake as
#marginsci. You're not dealing with online abuse. Always ask of your allyship: am I helping or hurting? - 1 more reply

White woman paints target on
#WOC for their social justice work> White man jumps to defend White woman by painting WOC as destructive. Ok!Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Understood. I won't make that mistake again. Being able to engage with people is one of the incredible aspects of twitter.

We have never invited people specifically to our
#DiversityJC discussions in the past - and we will now do so moving forward. -
I apologize if my tweets came off lancing. I sincerely apologize for this.
-
Appreciate you're starting to see the bigger picture; but issue is not just inviting
#WOC; it's thinking you can lead critique of this work -
I am decidedly not someone to lead a critique, or to lead on a discussion in this way.
-
I do want to clarify that
#DiversityJC is an open forum where we pose Qs and allow anyone to respond. FWIW it's not a led discussion. -
I understand the way it is written in the original post makes it look like it is, and that causes problematic confusion. I apologize.

We're also all early career scientists, two postdocs. We're all junior, and using the Diversity Journal Club as a way to educate ourselves 1/
