There seem to be many cases of sexual harassment coming to light, but these are tip of the iceberg. E.g. https://theconversation.com/how-to-stop-the-sexual-harassment-of-women-in-science-reboot-the-system-53210 … #marginsci

Not all universities have committed to releasing results of the national survey into sexual harassment. This is symbolic of broader problem

The problem is that the higher education and science sectors have no consensus on how to manage & collaborate on ending sexual harassment

Here's the tricky thing: the laws have definitions & processes in place. Institutions have policies. The system has many flaws in between.

Legal definitions matter. Part of the problem is that even in science, educators & students aren't taught about these as starting principles
-
Another part is the feeling of entitlement to other people's sexuality. Making rules like "no sexual advances allowed" often get push back >
-
> bc men feel that have a right and duty to reach for whatever sex they can. This idea also needs to be dismantled. (in my experience)
-
1/2 I've come across this attitude many times in my equity and diversity policy work. Men complain that it's "political correctness"...

Too often in Australia & other "Western" contexts, we let language slide on gender violence instead of teaching legal, scholarly definitions

E.g. "Jokes" about a situation being "rapey" or saying "sexual assault" or "sexual abuse" when we mean something else confuses seriousness
-
When women do attempt to correct, eg in meetings, we're ridiculed & belittled about being "too politically correct" & "can't take a joke".

Definitions have policy & legal repercussions. Lay misunderstandings of terms significantly impact on how cases of misconduct are handled.

Reminded of this recently. Colleagues who respond & take responsibility to fix; vs those who want to "debate" their right to use wrong terms

Not using the right definitions has an impact on misinformation; with victims not knowing what they should report & managers' responses
