I was actually explaining this yesterday to a WM friend who is an MD. He mentioned his WOC mentor was a very tough and formal.
Especially tough for #WOC whose authority is doubly questioned. Have to constantly account for credentials, including "Yes, I'm a Dr."

I don't think it occurred to him that this might be gendered -many women use formality for prof. survival whereas men don't have this issue

I teach a large class that is a good case study in this. My male co-instructor is almost never addressed by first name, I often am.

Thank you for sharing this - it's an everyday reminder of gender inequality. Devalues women's professionalism even in positions of authority
