#Sociology is having an amazing week revelling in Whiteness. White male Prof thinks he's exempt from White privilegehttps://twitter.com/ProfSteveFuller/status/847347731945332736 …

Can you suffer from 'white privilege' if you don't care what other white people think and your views can't be predicted on your whiteness?

and, is it me, or is the use of the phrase "suffer from 'white privilege'" obtuse? and from a sociologist, nonetheless. #marginsci

Someone else brought this up & I've thought more of it since: "suffer from" evokes an illness he sees himself as cured/immune. He's wrong.

YES! It's also redirecting the narrative. That a white male would be the one bearing the burden of white privilege????

Yes - a colonialist move: the oppression is his to be bear & be freed from. He's encumbered with this privilege he says doesn't apply to him

Certainly be feeds this notion. He knows better than to say this outright. He said this publicly to seek validation. Every level of wrong.

White privilege is a concept explaining how White people are buffered from seeing the daily benefits they receive from structural racism.

Buffered is an excellent term. It implies that with determination one can begin to recognize it.

In #sociology it means most theorists in our syllabus are *still* White people. It means going to events where White people ALWAYS keynotes.

White privilege in #sociology is reason why gender & sexuality is a common theme across courses but race is a specialist topic.
