I was invited to a USA conference. I applied for visa waiver program as an Australian citizen. Should be automatically approved but wasn't.

I followed up to see why this was delayed (I've travelled to other countries) & was told to contact USA Homeland Security. No thank you.

I was born in South America which is not on the ban list. I'm not a dual national.

I've not travelled to the nations on the unlawful ban list. My visa application was just before the ban & there's a stay regardless.

Many others are suffering due to the ban and are being actively persecuted. My story is nothing in comparison.

I'll ask my original question: what are professional societies doing to help researchers gain visas for conferences under current regime?

Not enough such support from the astronomy professional societies, unfortunately.

That's a shame. My story is small potatoes - but for other researchers conferences are pivotal to career building.
