People are talking about the feasibility of conferences—what the travel does to the environment, the ENORMOUS cost & how unfair that is to scholars who may never find the positions they want. Given this, thoughtful moderation is essential.

I talked with a pre-tenure person who avoids a conference because they saw someone ELSE destroyed during Q&A by one of those senior folks who confuses nastiness with rigor. A good moderator should be ready to manage that.

When I was a postgrad, I was lambasted because I dared to ask a famous academic to explain something. (BTW that academic was openly writing his paper as others presented) Another famous academic asked a fellow PhD student to stand & say her full name b/c she questioned his data
