What's the research that evidence convinces people in such discussions? I've seen research that says the opposite.
It's confirmation bias. These type of people seek out evidence that corroborates their pre-existing beliefs. They're more motivated to fight science that goes against their position. It's a lot of very complex psychological processes, yup. Not my specific expertise but I do have a PhD in Experimental Psych — saying because I'm half expecting a troll to pop in to say I'm making stuff up. 
Doesn't everyone do this? Not just "these type of people"? More likely to remember things that confirm your beliefs, etc.?
