When misunderstood, everything looks like a 'privilege.' Rights=enshrined in law, policies or defined practices. Privilege=advantages, benefits or perks from social groups, clubs, belonging. In social justice context, these are unacknowledged 'unearned assets' (McIntosh).
Unsure of the context, but usually, the issue is people applying subjective understanding of 'privilege.' Most of popular skirmishes around this word stem from misunderstanding White privilege (by Peggy McIntosh) which is watered down & applied in other areas.
