Yep, your additional caveat is pretty accurate.
The majority of online behaviour is the same as offline. If there's a baseline of social interaction (mutual follow) you might be colleagues or acquaintances or just admirers of one another's work/ content. More ongoing & meaningful contact might make you friends.
