This is spectacularly ignorant advice someone gave me. Do you know how many conferences rejected me because they didn’t think teachers were ready to do antiracism work or when they wanted me to add white folx to a panel? Free? This white woman wants me to work for free?pic.twitter.com/eioD3yjITQ

People who can choose to speak for free are exercising a choice. Many people who are *expected* to work for free are least able to afford to do so Making anti-racism palatable to White people is White supremacist nonsense. Making racism friendly to those befitting never works

The fact whiteness has been such a protective cand beneficial cloak to people who think *nothing* of asking me for free labor is stunning in the level of ignorance. They want us to fix a problem they created & please, in nice ways otherwise I won’t do it and it better be free!

The expectation that one should walk out feeling happy, uplifted rather than challenged and ready to do the work of anti-racism is 🤯 White people pay thousands of dollars to White speakers & consultants to do E&D talks... but want WOC to work for free... The colonial logic 😒

They want us to accommodate white tears. They also can’t handle us being the experts and knowing more than whites. Our expertise requires more than “smiley whites” racial diversity trainings. We require dismantling every part of systems and institutions.

Structural racism is a buzzkill, apparently. Talk about colonialism at a E&D event and watch the crowd turn. 😬 That's not what they want to hear. They want to hear: "Things are getting better. You're not one of the bad ones." These events are draining, hard & should be paid!

I agree. They want fake colorblindness that allows them to pretend everyone is white (that’s what it means when whites pretend we are all the same). Whites accuse us of creating racial disparities and racial hostility.

If people are afraid to have uncomfortable and tough discussions on race, where we all think deeply about how to change ourselves and the world around us... how does racism end? It doesn't. Inertia by "good people" is why little progress happens and so-called "new" racism emerges
