An internship isn't volunteering. If it doesn't lead to course credit, or it doesn't directly benefit the learner, then the candidate should be paid for the work. The market should value the knowledge of junior scholars because it's fair & it helps us build a better workforce.

Not only is it work for the individual who is skilled in the ability to use and leverage social media- it pays off hugely if done well and can really improve a person/company's profile. This isn't small and must be compensated work!

Yes, exactly - companies that don't have in-house skill for social media will outsource specifically bc they need that skillset. Legal definition of an unpaid internship is that it doesn't involve work usually done by employees. If SM is business asset they need, they should pay
