Black women and other #WOC have to make this point repeatedly: intersectionality is a theoretical framework to address gender AND race + other structural inequalities.
Intersectionality is not an identity.
Intersectionality is not White women & White minorities ignoring race.

White women can use intersectionality usefully, but it still means addressing race alongside gender. E.g. what are the systemic benefits & protections White queer /disabled women have vs other racial minority women? Interrogating whiteness is crucialhttps://twitter.com/OtherSociology/status/1117247638259163138 …
Dr Zuleyka Zevallos added,
Dr Zuleyka Zevallos @OtherSociologyWhiteness is the process by which White people's race is both normalised and "invisible" - White people don't question how race benefits them Like when WP liken any form of inequality (gender/ disability/ sexuality) to racism This erases#POC from the issue WP are elevatingShow this thread1 reply 2 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
What is Whiteness? It is one facet of White supremacy. The latter is the beliefs & processes by which White superiority is maintained. Whiteness is the social mechanisms by which White people can ignore race & White culture is maintained as the normhttps://othersociologist.com/sociology-of-race/#whiteness …

So when White people from marginalised groups remove race from equity discussions, they do so because of Whiteness (they see gender/sexuality/disability as more important, don't see race as relevant)
#POC from marginalised groups can't ignore race; it impacts their life chances1 reply 4 retweets 21 likesShow this thread -
The fact that
#POC need to keep reminding White people (esp WW) who say they use intersectionality about these facts shows how much more work White people create for us in equity & justice Interrogate whiteness b/c anything less maintains White supremacy, including among URM1 reply 2 retweets 17 likesShow this thread -
How to interrogate whiteness? At the individual level, consider how White people benefit from racial stratification. https://othersociologist.com/sociology-of-race/#white-privilege … I've even made a poster you can download from McIntosh's work. It's not enough to mention white privilege, but what action will you take?

At organisational level, review leadership, career progression, opportunities, & safety of Indigenous and other #POC. Having social clubs for minorities (e.g. LGBTQIA network) is not a proxy for transparency, inclusion or outcomes for racial minorities, including from URM groups

At societal level, everyone can play a part. Push for policy change. Vote for racial justice (Australia votes 18 May!). Don't ignore race within public debates (marriage equality was epitome of racial exclusion). Read media/stories by POC, esp URM POC voices. Pay for our services
