Does anyone know where I can get some up to date statistics on the number of #Māori academic staff employed at New Zealand universities?

This information is very difficult to find! I've been looking for it for a while. I hear that PBRF documents are used to do head counts amongst higher ed researchers.

Every uni is required to report on this to TEC - maybe that’s how to find out? I reckon we could relatively easily get colleagues from each uni supply their internal equity report though...

I don't know why this info is so hard to find unless university elites are ashamed about how few Maori are employed in NZ universities.

That’s my guess! I can count the School of Nursing Māori academic staff on less than one hand - and a third of us are on soft money

👎🏼👎🏼 there were only 2 Māori academics in the UC biology department when I was doing my PhD too

Numbers of Maori academic staff appear to be declining in most NZ universities. My Faculty went from 23 Maori academic staff in 2005 to 5 in 2018.

This conversation is sobering, given Australia looks to NZ with some hope. (400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics in Oz, including lecturing, teaching and support staff. Only 100 in senior roles)https://theconversation.com/australia-could-look-to-new-zealand-to-increase-the-number-of-indigenous-academics-and-students-92174 …

Those numbers are outrageous. Neither NZ or Australia have anything to be proud of with so few indigenous scholars in academia.

Back in 2016 I heard Tracey McIntosh speak on this. It has haunted me since. “Stop asking where the Māori PhDs are, & start giving those that we have permanent jobs.”
