1/ This study being retorted as showing a link between genetics and wealth is a WORKING PAPER. Irresponsible to publish without noting it hasn't passed peer review. Also, it is specific to "EUROPEAN ANCESTRY." Authors note ethnicity is a limitation*https://twitter.com/qz/status/1007523457217810432?s=19 …

*"European ethnicity" confounds class inequality across cultures, let alone 1st vs 3rd & subsequent gen migrants. Study uses household wealth at retirement & level of education as proxy for genetics. Problematic as class impacts edu outcome & income, shown in plethora of studiespic.twitter.com/e6ymguQ5nH

Authors admit they can't separate sociological dynamics from biology. They don't have data on genetics. They have socioeconomic data - income, education - but don't control for class. Wealth is transferred through intergenerational patterns & institutions - e.g. education.pic.twitter.com/UTc0ZEN4Uf

Social capital is concept showing how wealth is maintained through social ties, institutions, ideology and other symbolic processes. The education system reproduces inequality by attaching a higher value to the knowledge & values of middle class & elites.http://www.cambridge.org/gb/academic/subjects/sociology/social-theory/ruling-class-ruling-culture?format=PB&isbn=9780521291330#SesvOlFifdoVAwYy.97 …

The assumptions baked into this analysis are illuminating. Even the idea that genetics is responsible for success when the data speak to social influences is astounding.
