Materials on #intersectionality drew on my personal research, maintained by my team, all since gone. Materials were there until recent months. Wiped since I spoke out against the Academy/SAGE's inaction over sexual harassment by Professor Speed.
Awards are due in Sep 2018.

#Intersectionality was the greatest source of conflict between myself as program manager and senior leaders in/ linked to the Academy. Many did not want Athena SWAN to focus on principles of intersectionality, which were added to the Charter in 2015, prior to our pilot launchShow this thread -
In my time as manager, I saw deep dedication amongst individual teams & leaders working towards Athena SWAN awards. The problem comes from the top. Uncollegial responses to
#intersectionality incl exec White men &women pounding tables & kicking chairs in my presence.#marginsciShow this thread -
#WOC with specialised training & commitment to#intersectionality lead equity & diversity initiatives with true inclusion & accessibility. We are hampered by lack of resources, authority to make required changes, and a hostile workplace culture resistant to change.#marginsciShow this thread -
#Intersectionality was only added to the Athena SWAN Charter in the UK after a pilot with non-STEM faculties, who noted gaps on inclusion of minorities. Programs without intersectionality will NEVER lead to true equity & diversity. Intersectionality requires proactive change.Show this thread -
While I was managing SAGE, our national equity & diversity program, senior leaders involved with the program tried to have me fired for writing about ending sexual harassment in science. Emblematic of the state of equity, diversity &

Equity & diversity work is tough at the best of times. It is even more personally and professionally costly for
#WOC dedicated to anti-racism, transgender inclusion & accessibility.#Intersectionality is not a buzzword. Can't be done in secret. It is changing policies & practiceShow this thread -
Finally, the prevailing attitude I have fought against in all of my equity and diversity work is White privilege. White women & men think
#intersectionality 'dilutes' their focus on gender equity. That's b/c they think White women deserve equity 'first' & the rest can wait.Show this thread -
#Intersectionality does not weaken gender equity programs. It strenthens these efforts. Intersectionality calls attention to the multiple structural disadvantages faced by Indigenous & other#WOC, gender minorities & others. Without this, gender equity can never be reached.Show this thread

What the actual #%**% This is just extraordinary and cause for utter despair. I am completely speechless.

I'm very disappointed but not surprised. I anticipated some retribution after I spoke out on SH, so I archived all those pages, which summarised the research on
#intersectionality and provided tips to organisations on how to address inclusion. I'll reproduce this work on my blog. -
Still won't reach the same audience though, which is the organisations involved in the program. I said this earlier: 90% of the university sector is part of this program.
#Intersectionality is important for them to address meaningfully! Resources should be publicly accessible.

Holy crap! What a backwards move. I’m so sorry to hear that :(
-
Thanks. This means a lot.
I hope they change this decision and publicly recommit to intersectionality. -
And utterly heartbreaking to see your incredible efforts swept aside. Thinking of you.

Thanks for all this. It means a lot.

This isn't the end
@OtherSociology. Outsiders like those on this convo need to make sure constant scrutiny is applied to the Academy & SAGE if anything at all is to come out of it. Some strident letters about intersectionality seem like a good place to start. -
Thanks so much!

I would just like the luxury of feeling shocked by this. This must be exhausting for you, and so frustrating. How can it not be obvious that any equity measure must be intersectional or it is nothing?
-
It's draining to be constantly fighting the same battles. Execs in science kept saying intersectionality is too hard, 'let's just sick to gender equity.' That attitude only serves a small group of White cishet women and will do nothing to change the retention problem in general
-
It’s the same old story, then. How disappointing.
