Reminder: I wrote to @Science_Academy on 19 of January 2018 to advise that Prof Terry Speed, Fellow and one of the co-funders of their national gender initiative, had been found to have sexually harrassed a woman postdoc & creating hostile environment for another man. 1/ #metoo

Reminded the Academy of other harassment complaints I knew of while I was managing the national gender initiative (SAGE); plans I asked them to address on SH & discrimination (2015-2016); & gave them tips to start addressing these issues. They said they'd respond. Never did. 2/

I noted: "I cannot see the Academy's anti-sexual harassment statement, nor its equity and diversity statement on the website, although these were two things that I strongly advocated in my time at the Academy." They've still done nothing on this since January. It's June. 3/

'As I said in my time at the Academy, it is not enough to simply host the Athena SWAN program; the Academy & SAGE both as entites should be leaders in policy & practice to end harassment and discrimination, and to increase inclusion.' Again: 6mths later. They've done nothing. 4/

'I hope that putting up these statements on Prof Speed, anti-harassment and on equity & diversity will be the first steps made to publicy address this matter, along with a clear action plan for how the Academy & SAGE will handle SH and discrimination...' None of this happened. 5/

I used "action plan" as a clear ref to SAGE, which requires members to have SMART actions as part of qualifying for Athena SWAN awards. The first Awards will be released in September. Would the Academy or SAGE pass? That's a question the science community should want answered 6/

Since writing to the Academy in Jan 2018, SAGE has deleted its page on funders, effectively hiding Prof Speed's involvement. (He was also a co-lead of his organisation Athena team, since changed.) This is the OPPOSITE of transparency & honesty required of Athena SWAN awards. 7/

The Academy didn't have an equity & diversity/ anti-harassment policy in place when I wrote them. It rushed to say they'd release this after they found out ABC Background Briefing program would feature their inaction. Program aired in March. Nothing since.http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/backgroundbriefing/harassment-in-science/9566122# …

Organisations that do not act on harassment and discrimination send a profoundly damaging message to survivors & victims, plus cis-women and gender & sexual minorities in general, that they do not support a culture of safety and inclusion. This should concern us all. 9/

The Academy's gender initiative, SAGE, has amazing people driving Athena SWAN forward, including all the other co-funders. But they also have various committees that have specific remit to drive strategy. They have been silent on Prof Speed & harassment/discrimination. 10/

Around 90% of Australia's universities plus other leading science & medical research orgs are participating in the Athena SWAN program being run by SAGE & Academy. There are questions about conflict of interest and public inaction that ALL academia should be concerned about. 11/

If the organisations that have been charged with driving equity and diversity cannot act with tranperancy, integrity and courage when one of their own, Prof Speed, is found to have harassed one of our most vulnerable (postdocs), what does this say about their leadership? 12/

The Australian science community is being complicit by allowing this to go on without publicly pressuring for accountability and transparency of policies & processes. The case of Prof Speed is a litmus test. We are failing. If we fail one woman, we fail all survivors.
