✨🎯⚔ My first indie game Bad North is now out on Switch! ⚔🎯✨ I've had tons of fun exploring and developing all the interesting tech, design and aesthetics that went into it. Go buy it so I can keep up this lovely indie lifestyle:

I knew was a good time... just started playing it last night. HOLY FUCK! This game is something else; I'm very impressed. Thank you to you and the rest of the team!

Has anyone else tried something like that? What games do do massed dynamic combat well?

Each unit would thus have direct knowledge of the nodes surrounding them, be them friend, foe, or wall. Info about enemies further away would travel to them through the flow field. A unit could easily grasp if he's in a chaotic melee or a coherent frontline with a direction

In the future, I'd like to investigate continously updating Deloney graphs for context awareness in crowd and combat simulations. With a navmesh as base, each unit would split that graph as an additional node. Flow fields would run across the graph with relevant combat info.

Now I just gotta figure out how to make them land and how to animate them. Animating birds is easy, right?

I only update one or two boids per frame, and then bezier lerp them along. I was afraid this might cause oscillations, but if it does I'm not sure its even bad.

Hairy houses. I suspect these vectors might prove quite useful.

Really digging Bad North’s simplistic presentation that dazzles with its gorgeous minimalist design and an ever-evolving difficulty. By forcing the player to adapt their strategy on the fly, experimentation is highly encouraged which keeps combat constantly fresh and frantic.

Actually, if that center vert is placed at the intersection between lines drawn between the opposite corners, then all of the dot products used to calculate the barycentrics can be reused in several triangles. This might be the right track..

Hmm.. An adequate fallback might be to place a virtual vert in the center, divide the quad into 4 triangles, calculate the barycentric coordinates for those triangles, and then add them up in some way.

Whats the equivalent of Barycentric Coordinates in quads and how do you derive them? The quads in question are somewhat irregular but convex and flat

On the plane, the focus point is thus relative to the hex space bounding box. The math around this was much more finicky that I first expected.

My camera can now pan as well as orbit. I was unsure I would add panning, because users not used to 3D cameras might get lost. I think I solved that by making the panning relative and clamped to the bounding box (note how the camera climbs as I build on top)

Finally played Bad North. Perfect game for people like me. A single player RTS boiled down to it's essentials. Clear & simple rules, sleek look, elegant design, short & rewarding levels. Highly recommended!

The technical solution is almost the same as in Bad North. One big difference is that the bright colors wouldn't let me get a way with a monochrome reflection, so I had to figure out this somewhat abstract flat colored mid point. (Also, the wave skirt stretches further this time)

Ok I went ahead and put this whole project on water. Long time fans of the show know this was inevitable.

Every time I get to a new island and it changes the shade of rock or adds a waterfall or now there’s trees blowing in the wind...just...fuck yeah.
