There's always been an extreme right - literal Klansmen - at some remove from the mainstream right, but most of what gets called "alt-right" as a middle space in between is flowing from mainstream groups & publications. People aren't moving from militias in the woods to punditry.
The difference between alt right and mainstream right is being employed at some kind of institutional right-wing feeding trough vs. enjoying Pepe the Frog memes and online banter about helicopter rides and gas chambers
I think Erik Erickson’s recent forays into the latter prove there’s no longer any distinction.
It's almost like everything other than the racism, misogyny, homophobia, and xenophobia—say, state's rights or the sanctity of life—is just long-term concern trolling.
In full agreement, this folks did not infiltrate the GOP, they were always there. I remember back in the day, I spent a lot of time on Stormfront reading the shit they said about us and the content there was indistinguishable from rhetoric from the GOP (especially LE web forums)

The ideas are the same. Mainstream conservatives seems to have a problem with how they are packaged.
There's this weird unspoken grievance held by conservatives where they are quietly annoyed that they've lost the unfettered right to say racist things from time to time. I think it lies at the bottom of 'PC culture' gripes.
It’s always been there they just had their attention on women’s bodies and the gays now that they lost its back to racism and misogyny
