The notion that the alt-right is some kind of foreign body infecting the mainstream conservative movement rather than a natural outgrowth from it implies a large substantive difference between the ideas quoted here and the ideas above. There's always been an extreme right - literal Klansmen - at some remove from the mainstream right, but most of what gets called "alt-right" as a middle space in between is flowing from mainstream groups & publications. People aren't moving from militias in the woods to punditry.

In full agreement, this folks did not infiltrate the GOP, they were always there. I remember back in the day, I spent a lot of time on Stormfront reading the shit they said about us and the content there was indistinguishable from rhetoric from the GOP (especially LE web forums)
