It's not actually true in any discernible, empirical way that Americans miss the WASPs. It is true that Ross Douthat thinks aristocracy is good and he should just say that straightforwardly without ascribing some yearning feeling to normal people. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/opinion/george-bush-wasps.html …

There's a lot to unpack here, but I really can't take my eyes off this sentence which contains entire worlds of nonsense. It's like a diamond. Turn it in the light and colors sparkle. Dazzling, coruscating bullshit.pic.twitter.com/PfMDWLlGJb

        1) Is it true that there were *as many* tweed jacketed experts on the Near East or China without racist views among white Anglo-Saxon protestants back in the day as there were racist simpletons? I don't think so! 2) Did WASPs invent worldliness? What makes this a "WASP virtue"?pic.twitter.com/fJD62Ob68H

        3) Today's multiculturalism is informed in large part by people who are actually are not Americans or parts of families that only recently came to America. Is a discourse informed by them as partners in dialogue rather than specimens really less understanding of the world?pic.twitter.com/DFxLFmmMUh

        4) What does "authentic" actually mean here and what made WASP cosmopolitanism authentic? How do you know? 5) What does "transcended" actually mean here and how often did WASP cosmopolitanism transcend racism enough to allow WASPs to see non-Americans as truly equal human beings?pic.twitter.com/zGkBQTPfLv

"We" miss the Wasps? Who is this "we" that Ross is talking about. Wait, I think "we" know. Also, looking at government, especially the GOP side, i can tell you where the WASPS have gone. Nowhere. They're still running the country.

They define WASPs as people from Northeast with inherited wealth. Most GOPers may still be white, of Northwestern European descent, and Protestant but they don’t meet this newer “elite” definition.

To be fair, Ross douthat also wanted women to be forced to marry or at lead sleep with, incels, while wanting to ban all forms of pornography. He’s kind of a human shaped stain on the NYT.

Imagine being a white male, missing white male supremacy in leadership, and being so un-self-aware that you attribute it to the country and write about it in The New York Times. That is a whole other level of self-absorption. So much bigotry & lying to himself in one piece.

(Noting that there's realistically no way to "miss" white male leadership as they continue to dominate there. Makes this unbelievably whiny. "Other leaders who aren't white men exist now, so therefore we miss back when there were no other leaders but white men.")
